Parking Lot Classification

Parking Lot Classification from Aerial and Satellite Imagery

Parking lots in the USA cover extensive land, especially in urban and suburban regions. An emerging trend is the use of parking spaces for solar panel installations, known as “solar parking lots” or “solar carports.” While solar energy adoption has grown substantially in the U.S., significant untapped potential remains. Installing solar panels on parking structures maximizes space usage without requiring additional land, providing shade for vehicles while generating clean energy, and reducing the carbon footprint of buildings and facilities. These solar carports can be integrated with electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, enabling estimation of EV demand powered by onsite solar energy, thereby encouraging clean transportation and decreasing reliance on fossil fuels. Traditionally, parking areas have been manually digitized and classified—a time-consuming and labour-intensive process. Leveraging deep learning models to automate parking space detection and solar panel capacity estimation delivers superior efficiency, accuracy, scalability, and adaptability, and supports real-time monitoring while advancing renewable energy goals.
