Aspect

Aspect is the direction that a slope faces in relation to the cardinal compass points—north, east, south, and west. It is an important terrain characteristic in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), geography, and environmental studies because it influences the amount of sunlight, wind, and moisture an area receives. Aspect is measured in degrees from 0° to 360°, where 0° or 360° represents north, 90° east, 180° south, and 270° west. In the Northern Hemisphere, south-facing slopes receive more direct sunlight, making them warmer and drier, while north-facing slopes are cooler and retain more moisture. These differences affect soil temperature, vegetation growth, snowmelt, water availability, and wildlife habitats. Aspect analysis plays a vital role in agriculture, forestry, hydrology, ecology, urban planning, and disaster management.
