Data Field

A column in a data table representing a specific attribute, essential for organizing and analysing spatial data.

Data Field

What does a Data Field represent?

Usually arranged as a column in a table or database, a data field denotes a particular kind of information or attribute found in a dataset. Values about a single attribute or property of the records (or features), such as names, numbers, categories, or measures, are contained in each field.

For each geographic feature in a Geographic Information System (GIS), a data field in an attribute table may hold data such as population, elevation, land use type, or area size. For instance, the lake name, depth, water quality rating, and surface size might all be data fields in a lake dataset. A lake is represented by each row (or record) in the table, and a specific piece of information about it is contained in each column (or field).

Data fields are essential for structuring and organizing data so that it may be efficiently stored, queried, analysed, and visualized for a variety of applications.

Related Keywords

In a database, a data field is a single piece of information that represents a particular property or feature of an item within a record. For instance, fields like Name, Email, and Phone Number may be seen in a client database. The fundamental units of tables are fields, which specify the kinds of data that can be kept there and guarantee that the data is consistent, well-organized, and searchable.

Data fields are discrete informational units that each represent a particular property and are kept in a database or dataset. Common kinds include date/time for temporal information, boolean for true/false values, numeric for amounts or measurements, text (string) for names or descriptions, and category for specified groups. Accurate information storage, analysis, and retrieval are ensured by selecting the appropriate data field type.

A single piece of information or attribute, like a name, date, or price, that is contained in a dataset is called a data field. A data record, such as a customer profile with name, address, and contact information, is a comprehensive collection of related fields that collectively define a single item or thing.

Data entry fields are places for users to enter specific information in software or forms. Text boxes for names, radio buttons for choices, dropdown menus for options, checkboxes for multiple selections, date pickers for dates, and numeric fields for amounts or IDs are a few examples.
